How form and function are often intertwined

Last spring, my family and I were visiting some friends of ours who were camping at a nearby campsite.

The fire pit was on a hill and had a large metal wall to contain the fire. My husband and I spent the whole time corralling my 18-month son so he wouldn’t touch the fire pit, which was blazing hot.

At one point though, he asked to sit in my camp chair. That seemed safer than him wandering back and forth by the fire pit, so I let him climb up into it.

I was standing right between him and the fire pit, but my daughter asked for some chocolate and a graham cracker. I stepped away for a mere second. Suddenly my son flipped the chair forward and landed with his face right on the end of the metal pit.

It was awful. We took him to the ER and then in the following days watched in horror as the burn around his eye turned grisly.

In the end we drove him to the Seattle burn center for evaluation.

Among other things, I do remember being worried that my son would be deformed for the rest of his life. I felt bad for this thought at first. It sounds so superficial right? What is most important is his safety, and if his skin has a scar, does that really matter?

It turns out it does.

When burn scarring happens, it can pinch the skin so that someone can’t completely close their eye. There are, of course, a number of problems with not being able to close your eye. (From higher risk of infection, to not being able to sleep well to discomfort).

So it wasn’t so simple as, my son won’t have his clear smooth skin around his eye.

In the end my son was fine. He healed beautifully with no scar and still has perfect function of his eye.

But the event illustrates something I think that is often lost: Form and function are often intertwined.

You aren’t superficial for wanting a beautiful brand and professional website. Beauty can have a purpose. It can direct attention to the right place. It can help provide clarity. It can help people know what to focus on or who something is for.

So the next time you question whether your desire to rebrand and have a site designed is a priority, remember, people are attracted to beauty, and beauty can have a purpose.

Now if you work with me we will go a lot deeper than beauty and make sure there is function beneath it.

But the truth is, you can have both.

And you often need both to really get the fullest results.

If you're ready to elevate your brand and website with a design that blends both beauty and function, let's talk! When you book a call with me, we will create something that not only looks amazing but also works seamlessly in your business.
